Gerald Finzi (1901 – 1956)was a British composer. Finzi has few purely instrumental works, but “Eclogue for Piano and Strings” is one of them.
Eclogue is a very beautiful piece. I especially feel his admiration for J.S. Bach. The dissonances of the 2nd, 7th, and 9th appear occasionally, making it feel fresh. When I played it on the piano alone, I had to stop at the beginning of the string-only section.
So I arranged a solo piano version. The opening theme is a calm, polyphonic piece reminiscent of Bach, a little sad, melancholic and romantic.
It is difficult to express the quiet, slow sound of string ensemble on the piano. Try playing it on the piano while imagining the atmosphere of a string ensemble.
